Sunday Procession

Location: Statieplein through the city center to the Grote Markt

 

Leading the Sunday procession, the Gilles are a traditional group known for their bells, masks, wooden clogs, and impressive hats adorned with ostrich feathers. They dance rhythmically through the streets, throwing oranges into the crowd as gifts to the gods.

Broom Dance

Date: Mar 3, 2025

Location: Grote Markt

 

Performed by the Gilles on Monday, this folkloric ritual on the eve of spring involves waving brooms to banish evil spirits, ensuring a good harvest and prosperous year.

'Voil Jeanetten' Parade

Date: Mar 4, 2025

Location: Centre of Aalst

 

On Tuesday, thousands of men dress as women, known as 'Voil Jeanetten' (Dirty Janets), taking to the streets in a display of role reversal and satire, mocking societal norms and themselves.
