On the Thursday before Rose Monday, known as Weiberfastnacht, women traditionally take control of the city hall, symbolized by cutting off men's ties. It marks the beginning of the more intense phase of the carnival.

Carnival Friday

The streets of Cologne come alive with impromptu celebrations, music, and dance. Local pubs, known as "Kneipen," play a central role, hosting parties and events throughout the carnival period.

Geisterzug, or “ghost parade”

The Ghost Parade, known as the Geisterzug, is a Carnival event where participants in spooky costumes spontaneously join the march. Originating in 1991 as a response to the cancellation of the Rose Monday Parade due to the Second Gulf War protests, the Geisterzug became a tradition with political overtones. Participants, dressed as Grim Reapers, ghosts, vampires, and monsters, express their outrage in a spontaneous and unregistered alternative parade, with the route changing annually based on the theme.

Rose Monday Parade (Rosenmontagszug)

The highlight of the carnival is the Rose Monday Parade, one of the largest and most spectacular carnival processions in Germany. Elaborate floats, costumed participants, and marching bands make their way through the streets of Cologne, entertaining the crowds.

Violet Tuesday (Veilchendienstag)

Location: Nippes, Ehrenfeld, and Mülheim

 

On the final day of the Cologne Carnival, the festivities wind down with smaller parades in local neighborhoods. The main event, however, is the ceremonial burning of the Nubbels, life-sized straw men who are scapegoats for misdeeds and wrongdoings during Carnival. Symbolically burnt throughout the city, the Nubbels' destruction is accompanied by the singing of carnival songs, marking the official end of the Cologne Carnival.
