For Carnival, it’s a perfect balance — close to Philipsburg but with its own energy. Simpson Bay Carnival stays mean you’ll have bars, late-night food spots, and boat parties at your fingertips.

But the moment I ask if they’ve heard of Maho, they light up and say, “Oh yeah, Maho Island!” I even met an Australian who tried to convince me that I lived on Maho. That’s how famous this little strip of beach is. Staying here gives you a mix of resort luxury and pure island fun, and it’s just a short drive to Philipsburg for Carnival events.

To be honest with you, I wouldn’t usually recommend staying on the French side if Carnival is your main focus. The action is really on the Dutch side. But if you do want one spot across the border, Orient Bay would be my pick. It’s got that laid-back, European-style beach vibe where you can recover after a wild night at Festival Village. And yes, let’s not forget — Orient Bay is also famous for its clothing-optional stretch, so don’t be surprised if you come across a more liberating beach experience.

As a local, I’d say: stick to the Dutch side if Carnival is your priority. Note that the French side has its own Carnival, which offers a very different cultural vibe. So if you’re visiting for Carnaval de St. Martin then choose the French Side, but if youre visiting for the Dutch side Carnival, stay on the Dutch side for ease.
