The main event, however, is the ceremonial burning of the Nubbels, life-sized straw men who are scapegoats for misdeeds and wrongdoings during Carnival. Symbolically burnt throughout the city, the Nubbels' destruction is accompanied by the singing of carnival songs, marking the official end of the Cologne Carnival.
