Street Carnival is officially declared open on the Alter Markt at 11:11am, and the city stops working for the week. Shops close, costumed Jecken fill the Altstadt and Südstadt from early morning until late at night, and the old tradition of women cutting off men's ties is still going strong — leave the tie at home.

The highlight of the whole season, and one of the biggest parades in Europe — floats, bands and the Dreigestirn moving through the city while around a million spectators line the route. Expect a downpour of Kamelle: an average parade sends 330,000 kilos of sweets, 700,000 chocolate bars and 220,000 boxes of pralines into the crowd.
