Barbados Crop Over Festival

When is the 2027 Crop Over Festival?

TBA - Grand Kadooment Day is August 2, 2027. Please see below for more information.

Where is the Crop Over Festival celebrated?

The Barbados Crop Over Festival is celebrated in Barbados, a Caribbean island nation known for its vibrant culture and rich history.

What is Barbados Crop Over Festival?

Crop Over is Barbados’ national festival, running from early June through Grand Kadooment Day on the first Monday in August. Unlike most Caribbean carnivals, it isn’t a pre-Lenten celebration — it’s a harvest festival marking the end of the sugar cane crop, and that origin still shapes how the season opens.

Plantation workers marked the close of the harvest with music, dancing, and feasting, a tradition that faded in the 1940s as the island’s sugar industry declined. Barbados revived it in 1974 as a national festival and kept the old rituals intact: the ceremonial delivery of the last canes still opens the season, and the King and Queen of the Crop are still crowned. Everything that came after — the calypso competitions, the fetes, the Kadooment bands — grew on top of that foundation.

What to Expect at Barbados’s Crop Over Festival?

Expect a season rather than a weekend. Crop Over spreads across several weeks of fetes, calypso tents, and market days before compressing into one final week — Foreday Morning in the dark, then Grand Kadooment on the road. Much of the daytime programme is free and family-friendly; the fetes and competition finals are ticketed and sell out.

Here's what you can expect at this lively celebration:

Junior Kadooment

The children's parade, held ahead of the main event. Smaller crowds, easier to watch with family, and one of the most charming days of the season.

Calypso and Soca Competitions

Throughout the festival, there are various music competitions showcasing the talents of local calypso and soca artists. These competitions showcase the island's rich musical heritage.

Cohobblopot

This is a major event held during Crop Over, featuring performances by top local and international soca artists. It's a night of energetic music, dancing, and entertainment.

Grand Kadooment Day

This is the grand finale of the festival, featuring a vibrant carnival-like parade where participants wear elaborate costumes and dance through the streets to soca music.

Bridgetown Market

This bustling market offers a wide range of local crafts, art, and cuisine, providing visitors with the opportunity to sample traditional Bajan foods and purchase souvenirs.

Foreday Morning

A pre-dawn jump-up through the streets in paint, powder, and mud, following the Pic-O-De-Crop final. Wear clothes you're happy to throw away, and expect it to run until sunrise.
