The Leicester Caribbean Carnival is celebrated in Leicester, a city in the East Midlands region of England.
Leicester Caribbean Carnival is the UK’s third-largest Caribbean carnival, after Notting Hill and Leeds, held every year on the first Saturday of August. That date isn’t arbitrary — it marks emancipation in the West Indies on 1 August 1834, and the carnival has kept it since day one.
It was founded in 1985 by a small group from Leicester’s African-Caribbean community, among them Elvy Morton, who was born in Nevis and settled in Leicester in the early 1960s. What began as a community celebration built to promote togetherness across the city now draws crowds of 80,000 or more to the parade route. It remains volunteer-driven and community-run, and it has taken place every year since 1985 apart from 2006, when funding fell through.
Expect a full day built around one parade and one park. The procession leaves Victoria Park in the morning, loops through the city centre and Highfields, then returns to the park, which transforms into Carnival Village for the afternoon and evening.
Costumed troupes, floats, dancers, and sound systems wind through the city centre. Humberstone Gate draws the thickest crowds — get there early if you want a clear view.
Food stalls offer a mouthwatering array of Caribbean cuisine, allowing attendees to indulge in authentic dishes such as jerk chicken, rice and peas, fried plantains, and roti. The carnival provides an excellent opportunity to experience the flavors of the Caribbean and savor traditional dishes prepared by local vendors.
Victoria Park becomes the festival hub after the parade, with multiple stages running soca, reggae, and contemporary sets, plus a funfair and stalls.
The carnival typically includes workshops and activities that allow attendees to engage with Caribbean culture on a deeper level. These may include dance workshops, drumming sessions, arts and crafts demonstrations, and storytelling sessions, providing educational and interactive experiences for visitors of all ages.
