Philipsburg is a small town built on a narrow strip between Great Bay and the Great Salt Pond. Two main roads run its length, and you can cross from one end to the other without much effort. That makes the hotel choice sound simple, and for most of the year it is.
Carnival week is different. The Grand Parade takes over Walter J.A. Nisbeth Road and Front Street, the Village runs late into the night, and traffic through town slows to a crawl. The difference between a stay you can walk home from and one that needs a taxi is the difference between two very different trips.
St. Maarten Carnival runs for close to three weeks, and the heart of it sits in Philipsburg. That is why this guide stays in town. SXM Carnival 2027 runs from April 15 to May 3, 2027. The season opens gently and builds, with the biggest public energy landing in the final stretch around J’ouvert, Carnival Day, and the Grand Parade.
Arrive by Saturday, April 24 or Sunday, April 25, 2027 so you are settled before the closing stretch. The big road days land on the two public holidays, Friday 30 April and Saturday 1 May.

Two things anchor the season, and they sit about ten minutes apart.
The first is the road. There are two parade days on different routes, but both run along W.J.A. Nisbeth Road and Front Street and both finish at the Village. Front Street is the shopping and restaurant strip that runs the length of Philipsburg, one block up from the Boardwalk, so a room facing it puts the parade directly below your balcony on either day.
The second is the Jocelyn Arndell Festival Village on Soualiga Road, on the stretch locals call the Pondfill. This is the nightly hub for concerts, pageants, and competitions, and it is where the food stalls and the crowd gather to lime, which is the Caribbean word for hanging out with no particular plan and no rush to leave. Street events like the parades and J’ouvert, the pre-dawn street party that opens Carnival Day, are free to watch. Ticketed shows inside the Village are where you will spend money, though a few Village events are free each season. Pick your stay by which of those two you care about most, and how far you want to be from both when the night ends.
Philipsburg traffic gets congested during Carnival, and a six-minute drive can turn into thirty when the road closes and the crowd spills out. A nine-minute walk stays a nine-minute walk.
This matters more than the map suggests. A fete, which is a party with music and dancing that usually runs late, does not end at a convenient hour. J’ouvert starts at four in the morning. If you are staying somewhere walkable, you step outside and you are in it. If you are not, you are negotiating a taxi at 3 a.m. during the busiest week of the island’s year.
None of that makes the further stays a bad choice. It just means you should choose one on purpose.
Alicia’s Inn sits on Back Street, one block inland from Front Street and about five minutes from the Festival Village. That position is the whole pitch: the Village on one side, the parade route on the other, and everyday Philipsburg all around you rather than the cruise-ship stretch.
It is a family-run inn of eleven rooms, restored by Jeanina Dupersoy in memory of her great-aunt Alicia, and it has the feel of a place run by people rather than a brand. Rooms come as a standard queen, a standard twin with two separate beds, or a junior suite that sleeps four, which makes it one of the easier places in town to book for a group without booking a villa.
Note that reception keeps daytime hours, 9 AM to 5 PM, with Sundays reserved for prearranged arrivals.
The Castle sits on Achterstraat, which is Back Street, a few doors along from Alicia’s Inn and about the same distance from the Festival Village. It is an apartment rather than a hotel room, which makes it the one stay on this list that suits a couple who want a kitchen without paying beachfront rates.
The one-bedroom has a king bed and a sofa bed, a fully equipped kitchen, and a washing machine in the unit. Great Bay Beach is a two-minute walk, the parade route is one block over, and the Village is a few minutes on foot in the other direction. Guests rate the location and the staff highest, which tracks for a property run by a private host rather than a front desk.
Note that the address confuses people; Achterstraat and Back Street are the same road, and booking sites list it both ways.
Holland House Beach Hotel is a beachfront hotel on Front Street, in the heart of Philipsburg and directly on the Carnival parade route. During Carnival that is either the best thing about it or the worst, depending on whether you want to watch the bands pass or sleep through them.
The building opens onto Great Bay at the back and Front Street at the front, so you get the beach in the morning and the road in the afternoon without moving your car. Rooms run from city view to beach view, with junior suites, executive rooms on the fourth floor, and a royal suite with an outdoor terrace at the top end. If the parade matters to you, ask for a city view and you are looking straight down at it. If sleep matters more, take the beach side.
The Ocean Lounge is a genuine draw rather than a convenience, and a useful place to regroup between the day’s events and the night’s.
Sea Palace Resort sits at 147 Front Street, at the quieter western end of the Philipsburg Boardwalk, and it is closer to an apartment than a hotel room. Studios, one-bedrooms, and two-bedrooms, every one of them with a fully equipped kitchen, a private balcony over the water, and a washer and dryer in the unit.
That last detail is the one people underestimate. Carnival means costumes, paint, sweat, and a lot of laundry by day three. Having a machine in your unit changes the trip. So does having a kitchen when you have been eating out for a week.
It is still on the parade route and still steps from the Boardwalk, but far enough along that the cruise-ship crowd thins and the beach in front of you gets calmer. The trade is a few more minutes walking to the Village, which after a 4 a.m. start is often the right trade.
Four people in two hotel rooms and four people in a two-bedroom condo are completely different numbers, and during Carnival the condo usually wins. You also get a kitchen, which matters more than it sounds by day four, when eating out every meal has stopped being fun.
Luxury Beachfront 2 Bedroom Condo In The Heart Of Philipsburg/Great Bay sits at the quieter end of the Boardwalk, directly on Great Bay Beach, and it is the strongest option on this list for a group. Two bedrooms and two bathrooms sleeping five, a fully equipped kitchen, a washer and dryer in the unit, air conditioning in every room, and three private balconies. Two of them look out over the water where the cruise ships dock. Because the building is on Front Street, those balconies also give you front-row views of the parade as it passes.
Loungers and umbrellas on the beach out front come with the stay. Parking is assigned and gated, which during Carnival is worth more than it reads on paper. The hosts have been welcoming guests for over twelve years and the reviews are unusually consistent about how responsive they are.
Divi Little Bay Beach Resort sits on a private peninsula between two bays on Little Bay Road, and it is the furthest stay on this list. Three freshwater pools, a swim-up bar, a watersports center, a fitness center, a mini-mart, and seven places to eat and drink without leaving the property.
Philipsburg is about a fifteen-minute walk along the seaside path, which is a pleasant walk in daylight. The Festival Village is at the far end of town, though, so plan on a taxi for Carnival nights. There are no minivan bus routes out here, but taxis wait at reception.
One thing to think about before you book: Divi offers room-only, bed and breakfast, and all-inclusive rates. If you are out at the Village most nights and eating from food stalls on the road, an all-inclusive plan is money you will not use. Price the room-only rate first and see how the numbers land.
This is the stay for people for whom Carnival is part of the trip rather than the whole of it. What you give up in walking distance you get back in somewhere genuinely quiet to return to.

There is no wrong end of Philipsburg to sleep in. What changes between these stays is what you walk back into when the night ends, and whether you are walking at all.

No. St. Maarten (SXM) has very few hostels, and the ones that come up in searches carry Philipsburg postal addresses without being anywhere near downtown. One is up in Sucker Garden, another is out in Simpson Bay. Neither is walking distance to the Village.
Alicia’s Inn and The Castle, both on Back Street, both around five minutes from the Village. Alicia’s Inn is a family-run guest house of eleven rooms, better if you want staff on site and a junior suite that sleeps four. The Castle is a one-bedroom apartment with a kitchen and washing machine, better for a couple who want to cook. Other guest houses exist in Philipsburg, but we do not recommend them and have left them off this list on purpose. If you are traveling in a group, splitting a two-bedroom condo will usually beat a cheap room.
You can, but plan on a taxi instead. It is about thirty-five minutes on foot to the Village, or six minutes by car. The walk into central Philipsburg along the seaside path is closer to fifteen minutes and pleasant in daylight, but the Village sits at the far end of town. There are no minivan bus routes out to Divi, though taxis wait at reception.
It depends on your group size and how long you are staying. For two people, a hotel is simpler, though an apartment like The Castle gets you a kitchen and laundry at a similar price. For four or five people over a week or more, a condo almost always wins on cost, and the kitchen and in-unit laundry matter more than they sound by day four. Costumes, paint, and sweat generate a lot of washing.
